This is notice of a meeting to enable discussion of the regulatory future for natural and traditional health products in NZ following the failure of the Government's proposed Therapeutic Products and Medicines Bill.
Since the announcement by the government mid year that it did not have the numbers in the House for the passage of the Bill, a sector of the industry has been working hard to develop guidelines that can eventually form a basis for legislation and regulation for natural and traditional health products in New Zealand and now need your input and support.
Recent announcements by the Ministry of Health to impose some new regime highlight the importance for the industry to work together and establish a sensible regulatory model to achieve the industries and consumers collective goals.
Regulatory Vacuum
Now that the Bill has been essentially defeated there is a vacuum in which no-one is quite clear what laws will be as applied to natural and traditional health products.
As a result the Health Trust and Natural Health Alliance are coordinating a consultation meeting in Auckland, inviting all interested industry persons/businesses in an effort to finalise a proposed regulatory model that meets the needs of New Zealand consumers, rongoa Maori and all industry including the export sector.
Genuine consultation
If we are successful then this stands to be the first truly “citizen driven” regulatory system, reflecting the needs of all and coming from a period of open and genuine consultation rather than the "this is what we are doing" announcements the Government has imposed as consultation on the sector up to now.
At the meeting we would like to;
1. Convey the principles behind the work that we have done so far.
2. Ask for your input and assistance in giving thought to the issues of central importance to your business in any system regulating the area of natural and traditional health products.
